How Much Does a Porcelain Patio Cost in the UK?

Porcelain has overtaken Indian sandstone as the patio of choice. Here's what drives the price and what to budget.

Why porcelain over natural stone?

Porcelain is fired at extreme temperatures so it's denser, less porous and frost-proof. It doesn't fade, doesn't stain (no more red wine panic), and the colour is identical across every slab. Natural stone is beautiful but every slab is slightly different, it weathers visibly, and it needs sealing every few years. For a low-maintenance, modern look, porcelain wins.

Typical UK patio costs

For a fully installed porcelain patio in the UK including slabs, sub-base, jointing compound and labour:

- Small (15-20m²): £2,800-£4,200 - Medium (30-40m²): £4,500-£7,200 - Large (50-70m²): £7,000-£12,500

This is for standard 20mm porcelain in mid-range tones (grey, light buff, beige). Premium ranges and large-format slabs push higher.

What's included in our patio quotes?

We don't do hidden extras. Our quotes include: excavation of existing surface, hardcore sub-base, 80mm cement base, the porcelain slabs themselves, jointing compound, edging or border, and full clean-up. If your garden needs drainage work, we'll flag that up front before you commit.

How long does a porcelain patio last?

Properly installed with the right sub-base, 25+ years easily. The slabs themselves are essentially indestructible — the only failure point is the joint compound, which we re-do as part of any service call if it cracks down the line.

Can porcelain be laid on existing concrete?

Yes — provided the existing slab is sound, level and clean. We can overlay porcelain straight onto good concrete with a thin-bed adhesive. Saves the excavation cost. We'll check the existing slab at the quote stage.

Frequently asked.

Do porcelain slabs get slippery in winter?

Quality porcelain has an R11+ slip rating, similar to natural stone. We always recommend R11 rated slabs for outdoor use — you'll be fine in frost and rain.

What colours work best for UK gardens?

Light greys and warm beiges reflect the dull UK light beautifully and brighten the garden. Dark greys and blacks look stunning but feel heavier — they suit modern landscaping schemes with lots of greenery to contrast.
